As much of an impact Joel Embiid has on the court, leading the Philadelphia 76ers, his leadership off the court tends to be overlooked. Joel Embiid decided to lead by example and pledged over $100,000 to combat homelessness in the Philadelphia area over the all-star break. Joel Embiid's generosity will support project HOME, Sunday Breakfast Mission, and Youth Service Inc. Embiid's donation will go directly to offering 15,000 meals for homeless and underserved individuals, provide 4,000 essential clothing items donated to homeless teens and adults, and finance the care and treatment of 1,000 homeless individuals receiving COVID-19 vaccines. In addition the grant will provide support for 30+ formerly homeless families – including education, health care, and employment services and give funding for a six-week summer camp for 50+ homeless and at-risk youth. Finally, this donation will establish shelter and provide essential needs for over 300 teens facing homelessness or home insecurity. Joel in a statement said "So many have fallen on such hard times during the pandemic, I felt it was important to provide more support for individuals and families struggling with homelessness and food insecurity. I’m continually grateful for all of the support that Philadelphia and the fans have given me not just around All-Star but all my years in the league. I will continue to help in any way I can.” As we take for granted the skill of these superstars in the NBA and throughout sports in general, we must not overlook their commitment to their communities, and making the world a better place. Joel Embiid is a great role model for future superstars in establishing ties to the community, and supporting their communities in any way possible.
